The Ward Cove Sediment Remediation Project was an environmental Superfund Project sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The focus of the project was to remove debris and contaminated sediments generated by the Ketchikan Pulp Lumber Mill and create habitat for flora and fauna.  Sediments contaminated with polynuculear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were dredged using a barge mounted crane equipped with an 8 cubic yard environmental Cable Arm bucket and then disposed of in an approved upland containment facility.  Perhaps the most critical phase of the work involved the placement of a six-inch sand cap with only a two-inch tolerance over a 30-acre area in up to 144 ft of water.
